Intel To Stop Producing 90nm Processors

Sony Ships 50GB Dual-Layer Blu-Ray Media

Intel To Stop Producing 90nm Processors

According to motherboard vendors, Intel is to stop accepting orders and later sales of its 90nm processors, including Pentium XE, Pentium D, Pentium 4, and Celeron D.

The company has already stopped accepting orders for Celeron D 310/345/350. The Celeron D 315/320/325/330/335/340 will be available for ordering until the end of the year and will be produced until Q2'07. So, next year the entire family will move to 65nm.

The last Pentium 4 6xx (630/640/650/660/670) processors will be sold in Q2'07, sales of Pentium 4 524 will cease even earlier, in February 2007.

The nearly legendary Pentium D 805, first of dual-core processors to reach the $100 price tag, will "retire" in December 2006, orders will be accepted till October.

Finally, the Pentium XE will cease to exist in January 2007, when the company stops producing Pentium XE 955/965.

As a result, of all Intel's 90nm processors only Pentium 4 531/541 and Pentium D 820 will live to the next year. But they may also be cancelled during that period.

Sony Ships 50GB Dual-Layer Blu-Ray Media

Sony Electronics has begun U.S. shipments of 50GB dual layer Blu-ray Disc recordable (write-once) media with AccuCORE technology. The company also confirmed that it plans to start shipping 50GB dual layer rewritable BD media later this year.

Sony’s AccuCORE technology has been re-engineered for Blu-ray Disc media, with its benefits including scratch guard, archival reliability to prevent data/image corruption and deterioration, stable writing that reduces fluctuation as the disc spins, and temperature durability to prevent warping during severe changes in temperature and humidity.

Sony’s 50GB dual layer recordable disc has a suggested retail price of around $48.
