Core Officially Starts With Woodcrest
Today Intel is to officially announce the release of new processors based on Core architecture. The first model will be the server Xeon 5100 based on Woodcrest.
Let's sum up everything again. The Woodcrest will feature LGA-771 socket and will support multi-way configurations. This is actually the key difference from the desktop Core 2 Duo series.
Xeon 5100 processors are made using 65nm process technology and have TDP up to 80W. Here's how the initial series looks like:
- Xeon 5110 (1.6GHz / 4MB L2 / 1066MHz FSB, $210)
- Xeon 5120 (1.86GHz / 4MB L2 / 1066MHz FSB, $260)
- Xeon 5130 (2GHz / 4MB L2 / 1333MHz FSB, $320)
- Xeon 5140 (2.33GHz / 4MB L2 / 1333MHz FSB, $455)
- Xeon 5150 (2.66GHz / 4MB L2 / 1333MHz FSB, $690)
- Xeon 5160 (3GHz / 4MB L2 / 1333MHz FSB, $850)
- Low-voltage Xeon 5148 (2.33GHz / 4MB L2 / 1333MHz FSB, $519)
Woodcrest will also support DDR2-533 or DDR2-667 memory as well as FB-DIMM. Note the lack of HyperThreading support. Instead it offers Execute Disable Bit, virtualization.
So, Intel's new architecture took off and our readers will be able get in touch with it in about a month, when the desktop Core 2 Duo (Conroe) is released.

CMC, Ritek Poised To Produce 30GB HD-DVD-R DL Discs In Q4
CMC Magnetics and Ritek, the top two makers of optical discs, have recently started volume production of 15GB HD-DVD-R SL (high-definition DVD recordable single-sided single-layer) discs and are prepared to begin production of 30GB HD-DVD-R DL (single-sided double-layer) discs in the fourth quarter of this year at the earliest, according to industry sources.
Japan-based Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM) and Hitachi Maxell took the initiative globally to bring HD-DVD-R SL discs into volume production in April this year and will do so for HD-DVD-R DL discs next month, the sources pointed out. MKM will use self-developed AZO dye to make its HD-DVD-R DL discs and sell these products initially in the US and Europe at 4,500 yen (US$38.7) per disc, the sources indicated.

Supermicro Computer today announced the immediate availability of more than thirty X7 server platforms based on Intel's newest Dual-Core Xeon 5100 series processors (codenamed 'Woodcrest').
A popular model, the high-density SuperServer 6015B-8+/T+ leverages the X7DBR-8+/i+ serverboard to support up to 64GB of fully buffered (FBD) DDR2 memory via 16 DIMM slots in a 1U form factor that includes four hot-swap SCSI/SATA drive bays and a 700-watt high-efficiency power supply. This platform not only doubles system performance and memory capacity, but also reduces energy costs while operating at lower temperatures versus previous generations.
