Intel Launches 90nm MLC NOR Flash Memory For Multimedia Handsets

Panasonic Develops First Chipset For Blu-ray Disc Drive

Intel Launches 90nm MLC NOR Flash Memory For Multimedia Handsets

Intel announced it is shipping in volume the first 90-nanometer multi-level cell (MLC) NOR flash memory device - StrataFlash Cellular Memory (M18).

The M18 enables the new flash memory to operate at the same bus frequency as next-generation cellular chipsets – up to 133MHz. With write speeds of up to 0.5MB/second, the M18 supports 3MP cameras and MPEG4 video. The M18 consumes one-third the energy to program and about half the energy to erase than prior generation products, and offers the new Deep Power Down operation mode, all for improved battery life. The M18 also increases the NOR flash density reach, with single chip solutions of 256 Mb and 512 Mb and standard stacked package solutions up to 1 Gb.

To help designers speed integration and delivery of new handsets, Intel is providing the next generation of Intel Flash Data Integrator (Intel FDI) royalty-free software. Intel FDI v7.1 offers an open architecture for easy integration of a flash file system with real-time operating systems and three new features: Mountable USB, Multi-volume support and RAM buffer support.

Panasonic Develops First Chipset For Blu-ray Disc Drive

Panasonic announced that it has developed the new chipset for disc drives to record and play Blu-ray Disc (BD; at 4x speed), DVD-Multi (DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD-ROM), +R, +RW, and all CD formats. Blu-ray Disc format, which uses a blue-violet laser, is being promoted as a standard for next-generation optical discs. So far chipsets for BD-R/BD-RE and DVD/CD were commercialized separately. However, the demand for a BD drive that is compatible with all BD/DVD/CD media formats increases. Panasonic will start sample shipments in December 2005 and mass production in January 2006.

This chipset is in accordance with BD and DVD/CD standards, and consists of two chips: a front-end processor for analog processing such as servo control and laser power control, and a optical disc controller for signal processing as digital lead channel. As for PC interface, the new chipsets have a series of part numbers which are applicable for either ATAPI or Serial-ATA.
