And another announcement from Palm for today. The company introduced the Palm TX handheld, which, at the price of $299 (estimated U.S. street price), features integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technologies, and a large, high-resolution 320x480 color screen.

Palm today announced Palm Z22 organizer built for the mass market, which is the most affordable color handheld from Palm yet - with a price tag of $99 (estimated U.S. street price).
With the introduction of the Palm Z22 organizer, Palm is targeting the $1 billion per year paper-planner market. Research conducted by Palm suggests a substantial population of late technology adopters have been afraid to buy handhelds, fearing they are too difficult to use. So, the new Palm Z22 is called to offer paper-planner users a simple way to stay organized. Users will be able to keep track of their to-do lists, busy schedules, family and friends' contact information, shopping lists and birthdays.
Weighing just over 3 ounces and about the same size as a deck of playing cards, the Palm Z22 organizer has white front and translucent blue backing.
The software includes core applications, such as Calendar, Contacts, Memos, Tasks, Note Pad, Expense, Calculator, World Clock and Photos. It also includes a new game, Crazy Daisy, made by Astraware. The Palm Z22 organizer comes with AddIt), a program that includes a variety of applications such as CheckSplit, Chess, Carb Counter and Solitaire. The software CD, included with the organizer, has an eBook reader with three books and a dictionary; the powerOne Calculator, perfect for basic and advanced mathematics; and SplashShopper, a helpful shopping list application.

VIA Networking Technologies today announced the VIA Networking Atlantic VT6528 Ethernet 26-port single-chip switch controller featuring advanced management and security technologies.
Building on the family of VIA Networking Atlantic switch solutions, the Atlantic VT6528 is designed for flexible implementation into small to medium sized commercial networks, featuring twenty-four 10/100Mbps Ethernet ports to connect network stations and two 10/100/1000Mbps ports supporting fiber optic and copper Gigabit lines.
The Atlantic VT6528 also introduces the VIA Networking Advanced Packet Classifier technology for implementing network security applications to help protect against illegal network access, virus and DoS attacks. The switching engine performs forwarding and filtering at full wire speed, features advanced rate control, embedded packet buffer, MAC address tables that allow unicast or multicast address storage, and support for a wide range of IEEE 802.1 and 802.3 standards, including VLAN support.
The VIA Networking Atlantic VT6528 switch controller is a non-blocking store-and-forward shared memory Layer-2+ switched Ethernet controller fully compliant with the latest networking standards. SMII and SS-SMII interfaces connect with three Octal PHY devices, enabling connections to twenty-four 10/100MbpsBaseX ports, while two 802.3z and 802.3ab compliant Gigabit ports with GMII and TBI interfaces can connect Gigabit PHY devices or SERDES transceivers.
The feature set also includes by-port egress/ingress bandwidth control, broadcast storm filtering, 16-bit PIO host interface with three DMA channels, HOL blocking prevention, 802.3ad aggregation and multiple line segments with flexible load balance, and advanced congestion control. For VLAN support, the VT6528 complies with 802.1Q for multiple spanning trees and 4k VLAN with a full PVID range, as well as asymmetric VLAN membership. The VT6528 also features jumbo packet support on a per port or VLAN basis, and enables easy IPv6 implementation into existing network infrastructure through effective IPv6 traffic forwarding, and alleviates concerns about ever-growing network size by supporting Multiple Spanning Trees, while Layer 3 assist support includes multicast routing protocols, IP multicasting and alternative packet prioritizations.

Spansion, the Flash memory venture of AMD and Fujitsu today announced it is sampling the first single-chip 1Gb NOR Flash memory device based on 90-nanometer MirrorBit technology to customers in the embedded market. It is designed for reliable code execution and data storage in a wide range of embedded applications including automotive navigation systems, communications infrastructure equipment, gaming and industrial control. The 1 Gb MirrorBit GL device is the first based on the Spansion 90-nm MirrorBit process technology unveiled last month. The 1Gb MirrorBit GL device extends the MirrorBit GL family, which also includes the single-chip 512Mb NOR Flash memory device in production.
Spansion’s new 1Gb device augments the company’s broad product offering which includes densities ranging from 1Mb up to 1Gb. Backwards compatible with previous generation products (down to the 2Mb density), the device supports common software, pin-out and packaging and can be rapidly deployed without requiring costly board redesign. The 1Gb MirrorBit GL is package and pin-out compatible with all MirrorBit GL-M (230 nm), MirrorBit GL-A (200 nm) and MirrorBit GL-N (110 nm) devices as well as legacy Fujitsu and AMD LV family members (back to the 320 nm lithography). Packaging is also JEDEC-compliant.
The Spansion 1Gb MirrorBit product joins the Spansion GL family which includes densities ranging from 16Mb up to 512Mb – all in production today. The 1Gb MirrorBit GL operates at 3.0 volts (Vcc), features a random read speed of 110 nanoseconds, and offers a page read speed of 25 ns via an 8-word page buffer.
The new 1Gb MirrorBit GL part enables users to either execute code directly out of the Flash memory or shadow into DRAM at high speeds. The device supports industrial temperature ranges from -40 to +85 degrees Celsius. The 1Gb MirrorBit GL uses a NOR architecture that is designed to deliver 100 percent good sectors, eliminate the need for ECC and support a standard parallel interface, reducing system complexity and cost.
For applications requiring advanced security, Spansion supports Advanced Sector Protection (ASP) technology on the 1Gb MirrorBit GL. ASP provides complete designer-defined security with 64-bit password protection for sensitive software algorithms or parameters. The feature can be used by designers to store, lock and protect code or data stored on any sector of the device, or assign an electronic serial number (ESN) to their product. In some applications,the central office can use an ESN to identify their equipment remotely, control service levels and record access for billing purposes. The feature can help prevent malicious attacks and viruses, as well as help prevent unauthorized use of services.
Spansion is providing samples of the 1Gb MirrorBit GL device now to a select group of customers. Production is slated to begin in late Q4. The part number for the 1Gb MirrorBit GL is S29GL01GP. The product is offered in 56-pin TSOP and 64-ball Fortified BGA packaging. It will be priced at approximately $18.50 in quantities of 10,000.
