NEC introduces three new Melody LSI chips for mobile handsets

NEC Electronics introduced three audio LSI chips designed for mobile handsets: µPD9993 (64 polyphonic tones; MP3/AAC), µPD9996 (for entry-level single-speaker handsets), µPD9995 (like the previous, but in a 4.38x4.38 mm 48-pin package).

µPD9993 features DSP core for MP3 and AAC decoding and supports MIDI. DSP core also eliminated the need in a separate decoder LSI. The chip supports DiMAGIC, Adaptive Surround Technology innovations that processes two audio channels for playing five audio channels.

  • 16-bit DAC
  • +1.8~3 V voltage
  • 85-pin FBGA (6x6 mm)

µPD9996 offers entry-level features without surround sound support and external digital I/O. The chip is pin-compatible with µPD9990/1/2.

  • 16-bit DAC
  • +1.8~3 V voltage
  • 65-pin FBGA (6x6 mm)

µPD9993, µPD9995 and µPD9996 are already sampling. The volume production will be launched in November 2004. The first handsets are expected in March 2005. For more information on NEC Melody LSI series visit this page.
