E7525 and 3.6 GHz Xeon processors officially announced Intel officially released new Xeon processors and also introduced E7525 chipset previously codenamed Tumwater). According to the press release, the new platform performs 30% faster comparing to the previous generations (according to SPECfp_rate_base2000 for a dual Intel Xeon 3.60 GHz system (800 MHz FSB, Intel E7525) and for dual Intel Xeon 3.20 GHz system with 1MB L3 (533 MHz FSB, Intel E7505)).
Xeon-based solutions will be introduced by Asus, Compusys, Dell, IBM, HP, Egenera, Foxconn, FSC, Fujitsu, Gigabyte, HCL, Iwill, Kraftway, Maxdata, MPC, NEC, Optimus and Tyan. At that a number of boards were already announced earlier. Thus Intel Xeon series now includes 2.80 GHz to 3.60 GHz products. The latter will be massively produced only from Q3 on. In over 1,000-unit quantities a 3.60 GHz processor costs $851; 3.40 GHz $690; 3.20 GHz $455; 3 GHz $316; 2.80 GHz $209. E7525 in same quantities costs $100.
As for processor technologies, they include Demand Based Switching (DBS) and Enhanced Intel SpeedStep as well as Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T). Hyper-Threading is also supported. The chipset utilizes load balancing focused on CPU, I/O and memory. DDR2 support reduces energy consumption by 40% comparing to DDR333. Intel Xeon, according to the press release, will be used in the new dual-way servers based on Intel E7520, Intel E7320 (Lindenhurst and Lindenhurst-VS) and IOP332 (Dobson).
