  • 1 GB PC2700 SDRAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5700 128 MB
  • 120 GB 3.5" (!!!) Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 HDD
  • DVD Multi Matsushita DVD-RAM UJ-8205
  • IEEE 802.11 g

ASUS S300:

  • 8.9" 1024x600 XGA
  • Pentium M ULV 1 GHz
  • Intel 855
  • 512 MB PC2700 SDRAM
  • 80 GB HDD
  • DVD Multi Matsushita DVD-RAM UJ-812

Our Nikolay Dorofeev will tell you about their benefits and drawbacks after he finishes the tests, so stay tuned!

Maxtor introduces SATA MaXLine III series

Maxtor introduced SATA MaXLine III hard drives that feature 16MB buffers. Novelties are designed for corporate systems, have MTTF of 1 million hours, support NCQ (up to 32 instructions execution to improve storage subsystem bandwidth), have 7200rpm rotation speed, up to 300GB capacities and features Maxtor MaxCommand technology that implies two processors for effective load balancing.

As for other features, they include support for Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) drives. Besides, the Serial in a Box architecture provides disk scalability for organizing data centres.

A MaXLine III drive features three plates and has 250GB or 300GB capacity. The volume production is to start next month, but drives are already available for testing. The company also plans to introduce ATA/133 at some later time.

NEC unveils new chipset for 16x DVD recorders

NEC unveiled a new chipset for 16x DVD±R recorders (also supports DVD±R/RW, DVD-RAM).

The chipset features µPD63635 ATAPI DSP and µPC3335 ASP that control laser and servo. Despite the high recording speed, µPD63635 and µPC3335 have energy consumption reduced by 10% (down 1W at 8x playback) due to clock generator deactivation when it´s idle. Both chips have QFP packages that allow using them in notebooks.

According to the press release, the new chipset will be used in products from Pioneer and NEC. The chipset is already sampling, volume production is to be launched this month to reach 2 million units per month by the year-end.
