Grantsdale and Alderwood officially announced
The time has come. Online mass media today can publish materials about i915 Express (Grantsdale) and i925 Express (Alderwood) solutions thought these will only be announced on Monday.
i915G has Intel GMA 900 integrated graphics that performs 1.7 times faster than i865G, according to the pre-announcement. Intel positions the chipset for systems based on the Digital Home concept that includes DirectX 9, OpenGL 1.4 graphics as well as HDTV and dual-monitor support.
Another innovation is High Definition Audio (HD Audio) standard that is to replace rather obsolete AC97. HD Audio will be distributed with a royalty-free license and the following features:
- Supports modern standards, including DVD-Audio
- Up to 32-bit/192kHz
- Supports 7.1-channel Dolby Pro Logic IIx
- Extended support of multi-channel mics
- Supports dynamic bitrate
- Designed for desktop, mobile, handheld systems, audio controllers, modems, comms
As for i925X, it´s suits workstations more due to several "advanced capabilities" that improve memory performance optimizing access to it by data re-grouping. Besides, it supports only DDR2 (i915 supports both DDR and DDR2) most likely means additional solutions to stress the efficiency of the new DDR SDRAM generation. Speaking simply, Intel might have implemented something like PAT into i925 that is absent in the junior series. More details are naturally to be provided in the coming up article.
