ARM MBX R-S to become Philips´ foundation to compete with GoForce and Imageon

AMD officially announces Athlon 64 2800+

ASUS roadmap for 2-way server and workstation motherboards

ARM MBX R-S to become Philips´ foundation to compete with GoForce and Imageon

ARM granted Philips Semiconductors the license for MBX R-S graphics core (based on PowerVR MBX, in its time developed by Imagination Technologies and licensed by ARM). Though ARM embedded processors are often used in mobile handsets, there are more and more competing solutions besides the "original" rival — Intel XScale, including ATI Technologies Imageon and NVIDIA GoForce. Philips will embed MBX R-S core into mobile processors along with ARM926EJ-S licensed earlier.

MBX R-S features 325,000 gates, 80MHz clock rate / less than 1.5 mW/MHz power consumption (0.18µm process) or over 120MHz clock / 0.7 mW/MHz power consumption (0.13µm process). It provides 250 megapixel/s fill rate (1.5 million triangles/s rendering performance) and supports QCIF (176x144) to QVGA (320x240) displays.

As for ARM926EJ-S, it´s a 32/16-bit RISC process with ARMv5TEJ architecture designed for smartphones, communicators and PDAs. It can be used in digital still cameras and also for audio/video decoding, and can work under Symbian OS, Windows CE, Linux. It´s also made using both 0.13µm and 0.18µm processes:

  0.13µm process 0.13µm process
Square size with cache, mm2 5.0 8.3
Square size w/o cache, mm2 2.2 4.0
Clock rate 250-220 200-180

AMD officially announces Athlon 64 2800+

Without fanfares AMD added Athlon 64 2800+ OEM processor to its price lists thus extending its 32/64-bit desktop family. In over 1,000-unit quantities Athlon 64 2800+ will cost $178.

Athlon 64 2800+ featureû 1.8GHz clock rate, 512KB L2 cache, CG stepping. The complete wholesale price list for AMD processors is here.
