Flash memory deficit to last until mid-2004?
Market analysts confirmed that memory demand shifted to non-PC electronics. They reported that high demand for digital cameras and unexpected burst of sales of new removable media caused Flash memory deficit. However end users shouldn´t expect prices for ready solutions (flash cards, USB drives, etc.) to raise or drop. According to Semico Research , in such situations manufacturers prefer to save on optional features to recompense their expenses for Flash chips.
The Flash demand step was marked in Q3, and memory deficit, according to Samsung (NAND Flash is one third of its shipments) should last until H1 2004. Despite the increasing Flash memory production volumes, it´s still impossible to catch up with the demand.
iSuppli commented that tension in this segment might lower after STMicroelectronics and Hynix Semiconductor join others. However, the first chips might appear either in the middle, or in the end of 2004.
