Details about Sony Handheld Engine for CLIE PDAs
Yesterday we informed you that Sony released a new CLIE PEG-UX50 PDA based on Handheld Engine processor. Today we can offer more info about it, as the company might be releasing more products on it in the future.
Processor on CLIE PEG-UX50 PCB
So, the technical name of Handheld Engine is CXD2230GA. It will be made on the fab of Sony Computer Entertainment in Nagasaki. Similar to most other processors, Handheld Engine features ARM core, includes SRAM, DRAM controllers, 2D graphics core, a number of peripheral interfaces (including the digital camera, Memory Stick options), etc. The processor requires low energy to operate and enables enough video quality due to the proprietary bus technology.
The original feat is Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Management (DVFMTM) technology allowing dynamic energy consumption adjust depending on task complexity. Brief xhip specs are provided in the table below:
Model | CXD2230GA |
Configuration | ARM926 processor core, 64Mbit eDRAM, DSP, DVFM, 2D-GE, LCDC, interfaces |
Process | 0.18-micron, integrated CMOS DRAM |
Package | 368-pin TFLGA |
Power | 1.2-1.6V core, 2.5-3.3V I/O |
Energy consumption | Up to 270mW for MPEG4 playback in the Movie Player mode at CIF 15fps 216Kbps, AAC 64Kbps About 1.7mW in standby |
Clock speed | 8-123 MHz |
Transistors | 1.35 million, 1.3Mbit SRAM, 64Mbit DRAM |
As you know, CLIE PEG-UX50 on the new processor will debut in Japan on August 9, 2003.
