Rambus licenses Yellowstone and Redwood to Sony and Toshiba ATI ships RADEON 9000 PRO MAC EDITION Transmeta announces Crusoe SE for embedded market (addition) SiS746FX: new AMD K7 chipset officially announced M-Audio Sonica Theater: portable 7.1-channel USB soundcard SmartDisk FireLite: new portable 60Gb FireWire hard drive Panasonic CF-T1: 866MHz ULV P-III light notebook Rambus licenses Yellowstone and Redwood to Sony and Toshiba Rambus signed a contract with Sony Corporation, SCEI (Sony Computer Entertainment) and Toshiba providing the latter with licenses and the right to use Yellowstone and Redwood high-speed interfaces. According to provisional data, both interfaces will be used in the Cell project ("supercomputer-on-a-chip”, developed by IBM Microelectronics, to be made using 0.10-micron and smaller process technology. Sony plans to use the Cell architecture in its PlayStation 3 game console). There is much information about Yellowstone or Yellowstone Octal Data Rate (ODR) present for now: the new memory bus is expected to raise the throughput and performance, and also the production expenses due to lower pincount and more economical circuitry and PCB. As for the Redwood technology, defining the high-speed parallel interface for inter-chip data transfers, Rambus claims it will provide higher-degree performance and lower latencies than current buses and will be used the Cell project as well. Cell superchips, expected in the market in the late 2004 – early 2005, will represent the highly integrated multifunctional chips with up to 1 trillion mathematical operations per second performance (surpassing 2.5GHz Pentium 4 by about 100 times). Returning to the today´s deal, it’s worth mention it ensures Rambus receives about $28 million within 18 months.

Transmeta announces Crusoe SE for embedded market (addition) An addition to the yesterday’s news about the supposed release of Crusoe SE (Special Embedded) by Transmeta: the company has officially announced the new chips, so we are to make some changes to the material.Crusoe SE is based on TM5500 core – the low-power version of TM5400 with integrated Northbridge, 128Kb L1 cache, 256Kb L2 cache, SDRAM / DDR SDRAM support.
Chips are made using the 0.13-micron process technology in 474-pin BGA in Standard Power (TM5500EX series) and Low Power (TM5500EL series) versions, each ranging from 667 to 933MHz. However, the website currently lists only Low Power 933MHz version.
According to the specified data, Transmeta Crusoe SE processors will be operable in the 0-100°C temperature range, 24/7.
