DPS: the new direct printing standard with Picture Transfer Protocol support As you know, there hasn’t been unified solution for direct digital printing without PC before. Each company was trying to push its own standard. But it seems that standardization visited this field as well: today six companies, including Canon, Fuji Photo Film, HP, Olympus Optical, Seiko Epson, and Sony offered new DPS unified standard for maximal direct digital printing quality independently of the camera and printer brand.Canon, HP, Seiko Epson, Sony launched the initial developments, Fuji and Olympus have joined them later. These six companies plan to advance DPS as the industrial standard of digital photography. Currently DPS exists as the DPS v.0.9, the first "clean" version is being developed. DPS specs define the application level exchange protocol and do not depend on the physical media for using it with other prospective interfaces in the future. DPS 1.0, to be released, defines USB as the transfer interface and Picture Transfer Protocol as the data transfer protocol. Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) was developed by International Imaging Industry Association as the basic standard for image transfers. To obtain quality prints user will be need to use the DPS-enabled devices independently of makers.
