Coolers
HIS 6970 Fan Turbo 2GB GDDR5
The cooler features a vaporizing chamber located in a narrow module adjoining the GPU. Above the chamber is a heatsink through which air is driven by a cylindrical fan. The entire solution is made of copper, so it's rather heavy.
As we have already mentioned, such coolers are more efficient than those with heatpipes.
HIS 6950 Fan Turbo 2GB GDDR5
This cooler is smaller but identical in every other aspect. Note that it's set to speed up only slightly when temperature increases to reduce noise.
HIS 6850 IceQ X Turbo 1GB GDDR5
This cooler is based on a large heatsink with heatpipes and a fan. The latter is slow, so noise is negligible. However, it's a real pity that HIS stopped using IceQ coolers by Arctic Cooling. Those devices have established excellent reputation over the years.
Temperature monitoring results
Temperatures were measured with the MSI Afterburner utility.

HIS 6850 IceQ X Turbo 1GB GDDR5
According to our tests, coolers on HD 6970 and HD 6950 are truly efficient despite being optimized for low noise. Even at 40% of the maximum fan speed the temperature doesn't exceed 89°C after a non-stop 6-hour test in the 3D mode. This is more than acceptable for high-end solutions.
The cooler of Radeon HD 6850 is even better. It's very quiet and efficient, especially considering the factory overclocking.
