Preface to test results
Our test method has two peculiarities of data representation: firstly, all data types are reduced to one - a relative integer score (performance of a given processor relative to that of Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, given performance of the latter is 100 points). Secondly, detailed results are published in this Excel spreadsheet, while the article contains only summary charts for benchmark classes. Nevertheless, we'll sometimes draw your attention to detailed results, if they are worthy of your attention.
Professional tests
3D Modeling and Rendering
In fact, if we "forget" about Wolfdale core, which is generally faster than equally-clocked Conroe, we can even say that it justified AMD's expectations: equally clocked Phenom X3 8750 and Core 2 Duo E6600 earned the same score in this group of tests.
CAD/CAM
Phenom performs much worse in the CAD/CAM group of tests than we already noted in the previous article. To all appearances, we indeed witness a sad tendency, dictated by interaction peculiarities of software and a given core architecture.
Compiling
We could predict the defeat of Phenom X3 8750 from its main competitor (Core 2 Duo E6600) relying on Phenom X4 9850 results. We can assume that shared L2 Cache used in the Intel Core architecture gives an advantage over the fixed cache from AMD in this case.
Professional photo processing
This application is optimized well for multiprocessing, so Phenom X3 shoots forward.
Scientific applications
We can see a remarkable phenomenon here, demonstrated by Phenom (pardon the tautology) :). MATLAB is one of the three applications in this group of tests. And its built-in Sparse test cannot stomach the quad-core Phenom. We can see the triple-core processor operating at 2.4 GHz outperform a quad-core processor operating at 2.5 GHz.
Web server
In fact, Phenom X3 outperforms Core 2 Duo E6600 in the PHP Calculator test, which is critical to the number of cores. But it's defeated in PHPSpeed and in total score. PHPSpeed benchmark is not very sensitive to the number of cores.
Total professional score
This does not look like justified hopes ;). But on the other hand, it's not as bad as it might have been: decent results in the 3D Modeling group and even a small victory in Adobe Photoshop allowed Phenom X3 8750 not to be outperformed much by its competitor.
