Canyon 9I6PEA-L (i865PE) Mainboard

The board is going to be positioned primarily for PC assemblers because of its accessory pack and functionality. At the same time, it has all vital interfaces needed today and can be a good buy for those who want a relatively cheap system without luxuries.

The PCB is narrower than usual, which affects arrangement of the components: the IDE connectors are thus behind the PCI slots, while the audio ports are in front of them. Plus, a video card inserted locks memory modules. Also, it can be difficult to reach some jumpers when the board is already installed. Their functions are indicated on the PCB. The 3-phase switching voltage regulator incorporates 12 capacitors of 1500 uF. There are also voltage regulators of the AGP bus (2 of 1000 uF and several less capacious ones) and of the memory (2 of 1000 uF).

The board measures 305x210 mm (such narrow ATX is typical of budget products, 5 screws fastens it).

Connectors which are left space for: a connector for a bracket with a second serial port (it will be probably used in full-size i865G based models). Power supply to the memory modules is indicated with the red LED. System monitoring is supported by Winbond W83627HF-AW chip. It controls:

  • processor, AGP bus voltages, +3.3, +5 and +-12 V, VBAT and +5 V Standby
  • rotation speed of 3 fans;
  • temperatures of the processor (built-in sensor) and the board (built-in sensor)

Ports & connectors onboard

  • Socket 478 with preinstalled CPU cooler holder;
  • 4 slots for DDR SDRAM DIMM (grouped in pairs);
  • AGP slot (not Pro, with a retention clip);
  • 5 PCI slots (32bit, 33MHz);
  • Power supply connectors: standard ATX and 4pin for 12V;
  • FDD;
  • 2 IDE (Parallel ATA) - on chipset;
  • 2 Serial ATA - on chipset;
  • 3 connectors for brackets with 2 USB ports;
  • Connector for a standard IR module;
  • Connector for audio-out from CD/DVD drive;
  • S/PDIF;
  • Case open detection header;
  • Wake-On-LAN;
  • 3 connectors for fans.

Rear panel (left to right, in units)

  • PS/2 ports for keyboard & mouse;
  • 2 USB (2.0) & 1 RJ-45 (Ethernet);
  • COM port (2) & LPT ports;
  • 3 Audio connectors (Line In/Out, Mic) & Game port.

The rear panel is standard, that is why a special I/O Shield is not needed.

Accessories

  • Package of the standard design (common for all Canyon products);
  • Documentation: user manual in 5 languages;
  • Cables: 1 SATA (without power supply adapters), 1 ATA66/100/133 and FDD;
  • Bracket with 2 USB ports;
  • CD with software:
    • drivers;
    • user manual in PDF;
    • Adobe Acrobat Reader;
    • several system monitoring utilities;
    • McAfee VirusScan Online.

Integrated controllers

  • audio controller based on the C-Media CMI9739A AC'97 codec; 5.1 audio system supported, front audio-outs and S/PDIF connector provided;
  • network controller based on the Realtek RTL8101L chip supporting 10/100 Base-T (Fast Ethernet)

Summary

Its average speed scores, minimal functionality and accessories make this board a proper solution for budget PCs but not for top computers of enthusiasts.
