Testing technique

The tests are primarily connected with operations with different CD media as they prevail on the market.

General part - technical data of drives and their description.

Getting of the basic information on drive with the NeroCDSpeed and NeroInfoTool programs.

Possibility to make a drive region free (RPC-1).

Part 1 - recording of CD-R and CD-RW discs.

CD-R recording (recorded layer type is cyanine)

    SKC 16x

BLER factor of recorded CD-R. The device described in this review is used for the test.

Overburn test (recording of data over the specified CD-R size) with the SKC 16x(cyanine) and Philips Silver Premium 16x (phthalocyanine) discs

Part 2 - tests of main parameters of CD reading.

Tests of main parameters of CD reading with the CD Winbench 99 and Nero CD Speed programs.

Reading of CD-R, CD-RW and low-quality discs with the CDROM Drive Analyzer program.

Additional testing of capabilities of audio track extraction with the Nero CD Speed program (Advanced DAE) with a test CD-R specially created with this program.

Estimation of the maximum audio track extraction speed and errors occurred during it with the CD DAE 99. Two discs, licensed and pirated, are used for comparison .

Reading of CD-R 780 MBytes (90min) by full copying of contents onto a hard drive and measuring time of complete data copying. Rostok Media 90 min/780 MB 1x-12x is used for the tests.

  • ATIP: 97m 21s 45f
  • Disc Manufacturer: Optical Disc Manufacturing Equipment
  • Assumed Dye type: Dye (Short strategy; e.g. Phthalocyanine)
  • Media type: CD-Recordable
  • Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
  • nominal Capacity: 785.98 MBytes

Part 3 - test of drive's operation with DVD:

Tests of main parameters of DVD reading with the Nero DVD Speed.

  • Reading of two-layer company's DVD.
  • DVD-R reading
  • DVD-RW reading
  • DVD+RW reading

Estimation of quality of DVD-Video playback with the Cyberlink PowerDVD 4.0.

Part 4. The following physical characteristics are estimated:

Noise in operation (tray, seek). Marks out of 10. The higher the score, the quieter the drive works.

Vibration in operation with badly balanced CDs.

Thermal conditions in continuous operation (over two hours in the test and video playback mode). The measurements were carried out with a thermo control chip integrated into motherboard and an external sensor.

*The tests with Nero CD Speed, CDROM Drive Analyzer, Nero DVD Speed programs were carried out 5 times. Parameters closest to the average are shown, because it's very difficult to obtain precise results as there are a lot of various factors, even quantity of dust in the air, which affect the test results.
