Professional 3D Accelerators in 3D Studio MAX 3.1, January/February 2002, Part 4

Test results and analyses

Scene 3

This is the most complicated scene. The loading time is from 40 sec. to 1.5 min. depending on a card, and it takes up to 20 sec. for the primary initialization of the windows. It is not easy to move and rotate objects: they jerk. The windows in the 4-windows mode do not synchronize at all.

And let me estimate an average fps for different accelerators and APIs.

On the Athlon the GeForce4 and the FireGL2 show the best results, and only on the Pentium4 the GeForce4 loses.

The MAXTreme driver scores better results than the standard OpenGL.

And now the results for the scene loaded in one of the 4 standard viewport windows.

The professional processors cope excellently with their task, but the most powerful gaming one do not yield to them.

MAXTreme:

Surprisingly, rendering in a small window under the MAXTreme is not meant for the Quadro DCC.

Facets mode:

MAXTreme:

The FireGL2 achieves brilliant results. And NVIDIA should seriously think about positioning the GeForce4 on the market of professional accelerators :)

Now comes the Smooth+Highlights mode with textures off in the full-size window:

MAXTreme:

The Radeon 8500 is more and more disappointing. It's far not for professional 3D modeling.

Mini window:

MAXTreme:

The Radeon 8500 really is down in the dumps, while the GeForce4 copes finely with its tasks.

And the last mode: Smooth+Highlights with textures on, full-size window:

MAXTreme:

Again we can see clearly that the ATI's Radeon 8500 is aimed at a different market sector. However, the GeForce4 which is also a gaming processor performs excellently.

In general, I must admit that the professional cards leave the gaming ones behind. The Intel and AMD platforms go on the par outscoring one the other from time to time.
