Nero CD-Speed

The following information on the drive is obtained with the Drive check utility:

  • Vendor : MATSHITA
  • Product : DVD-ROM SR-8587
  • Firmware version : 5Z37
  • Buffer size : 256 KBytes

  • CDDA accurate : yes
  • C2 pointers : yes
  • Speed settings : 8-20-32-40-48 X
  • Read RAW mode : yes

According to these data the drive supports all functions necessary for accurate capture of audio tracks.

CD-R reading

CD-RW reading

Damaged CD reading

Reading of CD-ROM discs is uncertain, especially if discs are of poor quality. The speed was jumping much. And this affected the reading time.

Direct copying of data from a 780 MBytes CD-R onto a hard disc.

The drive read the 780 MBytes disc very good. The time of full copying is 12 min. 55 sec. The reading was so long as the drive read the test disc quite uncertainly.

Quality of operation with DVD discs

Nero DVD Speed

Testing with a two-layer DVD disc

Average Speed 5.78x
Start Speed 3.41x
End Speed 3.37x
Random Seek 98 ms
1/3 Seek 112 ms
Full Seek 178 ms

Disc Recognition Time 12.11 sec

DVD-Video playback with the Cyberlink PowerDVD 2.55

The DVD-Video was played without any problems; no artifacts were noticed. Changing of the layer didn't affect the quality of reproduction.

Noise characteristics.

  • Tray - 6/10
  • CD
    • Seek - 6/10
    • Total noise - 5/10
  • DVD
    • Seek - 6/10
    • Total noise - 6/10

Both at the maximum and reduced speed the noise level was quite high. Speed reduction is possible only with the help of external programs (CDBremse, Nero DriveSpeed): 48x-40x-32x-20x-8x.

When working with badly balanced CDs the drive didn't shine. It vibrated quite much. However, vibration didn't prevent from reading discs at a high speed.

Thermal conditions.

There are no any complains about its thermal conditions. The data were read after an intensive 2-hour operation:

T inside the case - 35°C
T of the upper surface - 38°C
T of the lower surface - 39°C

Possibility to make the drive region free (RPC-1).

According to www.firmware.fr.st, you can change the firmware version to make the drive region free.
