Accessories: user manual, fastening bolts, CD audio cable, a diskette with drivers, a CD with drivers and a soft-DVD player (WinDVD). The front panel has two buttons for Audio CD playback - Open/Close/Stop and Play/Skip. The drive is shorter by 25 mm than a usual one (176 mm against 198-203 mm). It solves a problem of small cases like minitower which have 4 - 6 5" places for drives, though there are actually two for full-size ones (203 mm). The front panel also has a rubber layer which eliminates noise and protects from dust.

Direct copying of data from a 780 MBytes CD-R onto a hard disc.

The drive read the 780 MBytes disc very good, though when reading the last files there was an error, but when I pressed Continue the copying was finished successfully. The time of full copying is 5 min. 43 sec.

DVD-Video playback with the Cyberlink PowerDVD 2.55

The DVD-Video was played without any problems; no artifacts were noticed. Changing of the layer didn't affect the quality of reproduction.

Noise characteristics.

  • Tray - 7/10
  • CD
    • Seek - 6/10
    • Total noise - 6/10

  • DVD
    • Seek - 7/10
    • Total noise - 7/10

At the maximum speed the noise level was acceptable, though it was necessary to reduce a read speed in case of some discs. Speed reduction is possible only with the help of external programs (CDBremse, Nero DriveSpeed): 4-8-16-20-24-28-32-40-48 X.

Vibration

When working with badly balanced CDs the drive didn't shine. It vibrated though not much. However, vibration didn't prevent from reading discs at a high speed.

Thermal conditions

There are no any complains about its thermal conditions. The data were read after an intensive 2-hour operation:

T inside the case - 35°C
T of the upper surface - 37°C
T of the lower surface - 39°C

Possibility to make the drive region free (RPC-1).

According to www.firmware.fr.st, you can change the firmware version to make the drive region free.
