Fujitsu-Siemens D1289-B (VIA KT266A) Mainboard

Mainboards from Fujitsu-Siemens appear in test labs and on the shelves quite seldom. However, the company's name quarantees quality. As for the speed, I must say that the market segment the board is meant for requires stable operation more than perfoprmance.

Accessories:

  • Package: a box of a calm design with a part of the board pictured on it;
  • Docementation: user manual (brief) in English;
  • Cables: 1 ATA66/100/133, 1 ATA33 and and an FDD cable;
  • Bracket for the rear computer panel with 2 USB ports;
  • Adapter for power units without AUX Power connector;
  • CD with the following software:
    • drivers;
    • user manual in PDF;
    • Adobe Acrobat Reader;
    • Quickdesk (for hot keys);
    • SystemGuard (monitoring and accident prevention);
    • Flashmod (displaying of your own images during booting);
    • WinImage;
    • WinZip 8.0;
    • DirectX 8.0.

The layout is good, which is provided by its big size and a small number of controllers. However, audio-is are located in front of PCI slots. It's not difficult to reach jumpers even when the board is already installed. Their functions are shown on the textolite.

The 3-channel switching voltage regulator incorporates 3 capacitors of 3300 uF and several less capacious ones.

The following controllers are integrated: an audio one based on the AC'97 cidec Analog Devices AD1885.

Non-unsoldered connectors: PCI and CNR slots, RJ45 connectors and a network controller's chip.

The system monitoring is supported by the Fujitsu-Siemens' proprietary IC. Voltage lines (+5 V, +12 V, 3 V battery), speed of 2 fans and temperatures of the processor (a built-in sensor) and the board (a built-in sensor) can be controlled. There are one connector for adjustable connection of fans and one for non-adjustable one. The Fujitsu-Siemens' monitoring chip throttles the processor when a certain core temperature is exceeded and adjusts an effective processor's frequency and fan speed, thus, reducing heat generation and noise, which is much required for office computers.

Brief characteristics of the board: memory slots - 3 DDR SDRAM; expansion slots - AGP/ 5 PCI; I/O ports - 2 COM/ LPT/ 2 PS/2/ 4 USB 1.1; dimensions - 305x245 mm.

Adjustment can be carried out with:

jumpers and switches Jumper to choose FSB frequency 100 and 133 MHz
Switch to ignore password poll On/Off
Switch to recover BIOS On/Off
Switch to protect diskette from recording On/Off
Switch to choose a power unit type AUX Power: >2 A/ <2 A
BIOS based on Phoenix 4.06 Setup of memory timings -
Setup of memory frequency -
Setup of AGP bus +
Setup of PCI bus -
Changeable scaler of AGP and PCI buses -
Manual assignment of interrupts +
Changeable FSB frequency -
Changeable CPU multiplier -
Changeable core voltage -
Changeable memory voltage -
Changeable chipset voltage -
Changeable AGP bus voltage -

We used the latest available version of the BIOS - R1.05.

The board is of high quality without many adjustement settings and functions; but it is highly stable and has one of the best processor thermo control systems.
