NVIDIA Is Ready to Start Shipping Tegra 4 Application Processors in July
NVIDIA formally introduced its next-generation Tegra 4 application processor for mobile devices at the CES in early January, but the company will not start revenue shipments of the system-on-chip until July.
NVIDIA Tegra 4, previously code-named “Wayne”, utilizes ARM's top CPU cores, plus a second-generation battery saver core. This Variable SMP architecture invented by NVIDIA enables four performance cores to be used for max burst, when needed, with each core independently and automatically enabled and disabled based on workload. The single battery-saver core handles low-power tasks like active standby, music, and video playback, and is fully transparent to the OS and applications.
The new application processor also supports output to ultra high-definition screens with up to 4K resolution (3840x2160). Also, Tegra 4 includes a Prism 2 display technology to reduce backlight power when the display operates.
This new mobile architecture enables an HDR camera with features like live HDR preview, instant HDR photos, HDR video and others. Tegra 4 also enables worldwide 4G/LTE voice and data support through an optional chipset.
The first commercial devices powered by Tegra 4 are expected to emerge no earlier than in August–September timeframe.
