Samsung Electronics Mass-Produces Transparent LCD Panels
Samsung Electronics announced today that it began mass production of 22-inch transparent LCD panels in March this year. Panels come in two types, black-and-white and color, and have a contrast ratio of 500:1 at 1680x1050 (WSXGA+) resolution.
Compared with conventional LCD panels that use backlight units and have 5% transparency, Samsung's transparent LCD panels boast the transparency rate of over 20% (black-and-white) and over 15% (color). Such high transparency rates lets users look right through the panel like through glass, and consume 90% less electricity compared with conventional LCD panels using backlight units. This is because transparent LCD panels utilize ambient light, e.g. sunlight, which consequently reduces the dependency on electricity for generating power.
Samsung's transparent LCD panels also incorporate HDMI and USB interfaces.
Transparent display panels have a lot of possibilities as advertising tools which can be applied to show windows and outdoor billboards or used at showcases. Corporations and schools can also adopt the panel as interactive communication devices which display data more effectively.
