Lite-On IT To ship 18x LightScribe DVD Burners To HP In November
While Lite-On IT is expected to start shipping 18x DVD burners to Hewlett-Packard (HP) this month, the growing tension in competition between Lite-On IT, Hitachi-LG Data Storage (HLDS) and Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology (TSST) facilitated OEM prices to further drop, according to sources at Taiwan-based optical disk drive (ODD) makers.
The sources detailed that this month, Lite-On IT starts shipping internal (940i) and external (model 940e) models of 18x DVD burners to HP. Both burners support the latest 1.2 version of HP's LightScribe technology.
Lite-On IT declined to comment, citing customers confidentiality.
According to the sources, HP ordered 16x DVD burners at HLDS. Landing orders for 18x burners from HP would definitely strengthen Lite-On IT's positions in the competition, the sources said.
TSST, on its part, strives to extend market share, leveraging aggressive pricing. While OEM prices for 16x DVD dropped below US$30, TSST slashed its quotes to as low as US$25.
Although HLDS seems falling behind rivals in the 18x DVD burner OEM race, the ODD makers noted that upcoming 20x DVD burners and expected arrival of Foxconn Electronics (the registered trade name of Hon Hai Precision Industry) must add uncertainty to the competition.
