SiS At CeBIT 2006: Motherboards And Memory

At CeBIT 2006 SiS introduced a number of its products. Let's start with memory modules - from DDR400 to DDR2-800, as well as SO-DIMM.

SiS is trying to enter the premium memory market segment, but for now aims at positions slightly below Kingston. Well, let's wait and see.

In its traditional field of motherboard chipsets SiS introduced a lot of solutions. Let's take a more detailed look at them.

A prototype on SiS 756 + SiS 966 chipset:

SiS 756 chipset:

  • AMD64
  • Socket AM2, Socket 939 è Socket 754
  • PCIe x16

A prototype on SiS 761GX + SiS 966 chipset:

SiS 761GX chipset:

  • AMD64
  • Socket AM2, Socket 939 è Socket 754
  • PCIe x16
  • Integrated SiS Mirage 1 graphics (an office solution)

A prototype on SiS 770 + SiS 966 chipset:

SiS 770 chipset:

  • AMD64
  • Socket AM2, Socket 939 è Socket 754
  • PCIe x16
  • Integrated SiS Mirage 3 graphics (DX9, HD, interface for external chip for playing protected HD content)

A prototype on SiS 649FX + SiS 966 chipset:

SiS 649FX chipset:

  • Intel Pentium 4 / Pentium D (QPB up to 1066 MHz)
  • Socket LGA775
  • Single-channel memory controller for DDR2-667 / DDR-400
  • PCIe x16

A prototype on SiS 656FX + SiS 966 chipset:

SiS 656FX chipset:

  • Intel Pentium 4 / Pentium D (QPB up to 1066MHz)
  • Socket LGA775
  • Dual-channel memory controller for DDR2-667 / DDR-400
  • PCIe x16

The SiS 966 Southbridge supporting MuTIOL (connects to Northbridge via PCIe x1) features:

  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • 4 x SATA-II (RAID 0, 1, 0+1, 5, JBOD)
  • HD-Audio

The chipsets will be interesting in the budget segment, but, of course, their success will depend on motherboard vendors support.

SiS hasn't forgotten to remind that their Southbridge is used in Microsoft Xbox 360:

Developed specially for the console, it provides:

  • PCIe interface
  • SATA controller
  • USB2.0 controller
  • Ethernet controller
  • Audio effects processor
