LaCie And Mandriva Introduce GlobeTrotter Portable Linux Desktop
LaCie introduced a mobile USB hard drive pre-loaded with a specially tuned version of Mandriva's Linux Limited Edition 2005 operating system: the GlobeTrotter 2.0 in 40GB or 80GB. The novelty allows users to turn any PC into their personal Linux desktop.
To use the drive, plug it into the USB port of a host PC and turn it on. Hardware on the host computer is automatically detected but is not modified in any way. When the job is done, GlobeTrotter 2.0 can be taken to a different workstation with up to 80GB a userís data including applications and personal settings.
Among the included software is the productivity suite OpenOffice.org, integrated personal information management software such as Kontact and Evolution, as well as development tools.
LaCie GlobeTrotter 2.0 comes with 30 days of web support from Mandriva, and membership to Mandriva Club and Mandriva Online for a month.
The new hard drive is available for pre-order today on LaCie websites and will be widely available later this month for $139 (40GB) and $199 (80GB). Drives ship with all cables and instructions needed for immediate use.
