More Details On R520 Sample
VR-Zone and HKEPC posted a number of photographs of an ATI R520 based graphics card expected officialy this month after numerous delays. The first image shows the novelty near Radeon X850XT PE and GeForce 7800GTX.
The card features R520 Rev 02 GPU, which is relatively old, judging by the fact that the latest samples are marked Rev 05, according to some sources.
The final design might also change. In particular, the amount of slots to be occupied by the card is still unknown. On the one hand, a powerful GPU requires a corresponding cooler that might occupy the neighbouring slot. On the other hand, R520 is made using 90nm process that reduces heat dissipation.
Obviously, the transition to new process in its early stages negatively affects the crystal yield. As you might know, R520 core with slight defects will have some pipelines blocked. This means we might see products with 32, 24 or 16 pipelines.
The sample has 1.26ns Samsung GDDR3 memory. The core has 512-bit bus, while the memory interface is 256-bit. As you can see, the memory is organized as 8 chips with 2M 32-bit words in each.
Like GeForce 7800GTX, ATI´s novelty has Dual Link DVI output. The signal is formed by a dual RAMDAC operating at 400MHz. Max. resolution is 2560x1600 at 32-bit color and 60Hz.
