S3 Graphics Prepares An Answer To SLI And Crossfire
It seem S3 Graphics is again full of determination to fight for its place under the sun. The company plans to advance in several directions at once: high-performance, middle-end, low-end, and mobile graphics. Speaking of the first direction, the company is preparing a proprietary variant of multi-GPU configuration - Multi-G - which is essentially an answer to NVIDIA SLI and ATI Crossfire.
The existing solutions are based on the same idea of several simultaneously working PCI Express graphics cards, each processing its part of data. Speaking of technical implementation, the way of S3 Graphics is unknown.
The attention being paid to multi-GPU solutions is also noticeable in S3 Graphics' roadmap. The release of Chrome S27 with Multi-G support is planned to Q4 this year. With this product S3 Graphics is going to enter the high-performance graphics segment (since Chrome 27 is to work at over 700MHz).
Multi-G support is also planned for Destination Films chip that is to replace Chrome S27 by the end of 2006. This one will be released in two variants: D1 (top pricing and performance) and D2 (average pricing and performance). Perhaps, S3 will offer Multi-G in other, more affordable solutions. A relative confirmation of this can be seen on S3's private presentation image published by HKEPC.
