ICANN approves a domain for mobile handsets
The current efforts to adapt web pages for mobile handsets have been of rather humble success until now, but developers continue their work anyway. Under the pressure of large companies specializing in various fields of mobile technologies, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved a new WWW domain dedicated to wireless phones ".mobi". It is called to further expand feature set of mobile handsets and increase their market potential, project organizers (e.g. Microsoft) say.
Since cellular operators underline high bandwidth as a distinctive feature of 3G networks, and mobile phone vendors add more and more functions to newer products, all of them hope the new domain will attract buyers to the idea of upgrading their cellular phones.
The first websites dot mobi are expected in 2006. They will be specially developed considering the limited nature of mobile devices such as small screens and resources. But it will take a few years more to promote the domain to masses, analysts say.
Within the first 90 days, the registration priority will be given to companies developing websites for their respective mobile brands.
