AMD unveils top-end Athlon 64 FX-57 processor
AMD unveiled the top-end Athlon 64 FX-57 processor, which is said to be the most powerful one for your gaming needs.
Since games today generally don´t utilize multi-core advantages, Athlon 64 FX is a single-core solution. However, a dual-core AMD Athlon 64 FX is also in plans dated to the arrival of such games.
The novelty has clock rate of 2.8GHz comparing to 2.6GHz of the previous Athlon 64 FX-55. Like the dual-core Athlon 64 X2 released earlier this month, Athlon 64 FX-57 is made using 90nm process that reduces its heat emission and cost price. FX-57 features 1MB of L2 cache and 2GHz HyperTransport bus. Supporting memory up to DDR533, it stil can´t work with DDR2. The processor is to be installed into existing Socket 939 motherboards, BIOS upgrade required.
It´s interesting that the vendor underlines exactly this CPU design for gaming needs. Thus, perhaps, we´ll witness another even more powerful, yet single-core chip from AMD.
AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 are already available for $1,031 in over 1,000-unit quantities.
