Adaptec announces ZCR for SATA-2 drives
Adaptec announced the industry-first ZCR (Zero Channel RAID) adapter for SATA-2 drives.
ZCR doesn´t require a PCI slot, but is installed into special motherboard socket making integrated SATA-2 controllers support RAID up to level 5 in hardware. Until now these relatively inexpensive solutions were a part of SCSI-equipped servers, but now the company responded to the demand for affordable SATA storage solutions for entry-level and performance servers.
Supermicro, one of the major vendors of server motherboards and platforms, informed on plans to release several solutions supporting the new controller, including 1U SS6014P-TR platform with 4 bays for hot-swappable SATA drives that, with ZCR, can be organized into a fully-featured RAID-5 array (the platform has fault-tolerant PSUs and fans by default).
Besides, the company is going to introduce several more 1U, 2U and 3U platforms supporting the new Adaptec ZCR.
