2.5" Samsung Spinpoint M40 hard drives are available for masses
According to the Korean say25, today Samsung launched the volume shipments of its 2.5" Spinpoint M40 hard drives with initial capacity of 40GB.
Pity, but there´s nothing published regarding this model, so observers from say25 suggested taking some information from price lists: 5400rpm, 8MB buffer, 12ms seek, Giant Magneto-Resistive (GMR) heads. Besides, more information is available at company´s Polish website: ATA100 interface, 409Mbps throughput, 2.4 bel read/write noise, 2.2 bel standby noise. Device´s operating shock is 250 g (for 2 ms), non-operating — 900 g (for 1ms), and the MTBF is 330,000. HDD energy consumption is 2.4W at seek, 2.3W at read/write on track, 0.25W in standby, and 0.1W in sleep.
According to the source, having released 40GB MP0402H, Samsung is working on 30GB MP0302H, 60GB MP0603H and 80GB MP0804H models.
