Nikon D70: a rival for Canon 300D?
The Web brought the first trustworthy information about Nikon´s new (and maybe inexpensive) digital SLR camera Nikon D70. Despite we found this information right on company´s Japanese website, there´s very scarse information available. Company´s British website even states in a pop-up window that the camera is still in development now.

In the press release posted on Nikon´s North American website the company states that the development of D70, a new digital SLR camera with changeable lens (Nikon F mount) was initiated to combine high quality with pleasing price. Alongside the company is developing the new products for its Zoom-Nikkor DX (APS-C) lens series scheduled for sale together with D70 – in spring 2004. According to the press release, the D70 body will cost up to $999.
Pity, but no specs of the sensor or any other Nikon D70 components are not available at the moment. Still some details are promised in the nearest future. I´ll just add that currently the company ships three lens in its Zoom-Nikkor DX series (1.5 ratio):
- AF DX Fisheye-Nikkor — 10.5mm, f/2.8G ED: 180° viewing angle
- AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor — 12-24mm, f/4G IF-ED: 99° – 61° viewing angle
- AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor — 17-55mm, f/2.8G IF-ED: 79° – 28°50´ viewing angle
Of course, all this obviously looks like Nikon´s answer to Canon´s 300D camera. The latter introduced a simpler version of its 10D model, while Nikon would offer a "mainstream" version of the 100D. It´s hard to say whether Nikon D70 is to be a worthy rival without knowing at least some specs and, what´s more important, the first user opinions...
