Philips: two displays and a camera in a single 6.8mm-thick unit
Philips unveiled its latest development in the field of mobile camera-enabled handset displays. In particular, it introduced a prototype of a clamshell device with internal 1.9" 176x220 color TFT, external 1.3" 98x65 CSTN (color super-twisted nematic) and an integrated digital camera. Both displays and a camera are encased into a compact body just 6.8mm thick. The display module provides the same backlight for both displays, changing its brightness, depending on time of the day and light.
The prototype is aimed at company´s OEM partners. The display unit features a realtime JPEG codec that allows to use the display as an electronic viewfinder and hardware 2D processor for performing simple operations on digital images. Besides, the prototype features a polyphonic speaker and a Vibrating alerter.
The company is expected to showcase its novelty at PT/Wireless & Networks Comm China 2003 starting in a week in Peking.
