Introducing one of the most expected events of the year: today Intel announced that hardware systems and software suites supporting Intel Itanium 2 CPU will appear for sale these days. The commercial shipments of Intel Itanium 2 have already began worldwide.

Intel Itanium 2 is the second in the Intel Itanium family, that has been developed for enterprise high-end applications. Intel Itanium 2 processor is hardware compatible with two future generations of this family.

Intel Itanium processors are supported by Microsoft Windows; Hewlett-Packard HP-UX; Linux from Caldera, MSC.Software, Red Hat, SuSE, and TurboLinux. Besides, Microsoft plans to release Windows.NET Datacenter and Enterprise Server for Intel Itanium 2, and HP is going to present versions of its OpenVMS and Non Stop Kernel operating systems, optimized for all Intel Itanium processors.

Intel Itanium 2 will be supported by Intel E8870 chipset that is to be released this fall. It is capable of supporting 2 to 16 processors in a system. Besides, some OEM vendors plan to present own chipsets and begin selling them this summer.
