JPEG defends free images
We´ve already written that North American Forgent Networks was seeking royalties from a patent it acquired five years ago. The company estimates client device makers and any companies using JPEG images to pay $22 million only this quarter.
Sony has already paid $15 million for the right to use the patent, but Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) reported it was not going to pass the format away to anybody and launched a web page to gather prior JPEG or similar image examples.
Let´s hope the story ends like glass bottle patent episode. It was enough to show the bottle, made several hundred years ago, to prove claim unfoundedness.
