New DVD standard specifications from Toshiba and NEC
According to the Japanese Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Toshiba and NEC, in contrast to Blu-ray Disc, consisting of nine South Korean, Japanese and European companies under Sony´s leadership, are working on their own version of the next-generation DVD format. Naturally, standards also touch blue range lasers.
Provisional data indicate that the new format will enable to store four times more data per disc against the current DVDs. Despite lower capacity of Toshiba-NEC discs comparing to the rivals, one of their advancement is lower production expenses. The economy of Toshiba-NEC standard is that new discs are similar enough to the current DVDs, so they can be produced on already existing DVD lines with some changes implemented.
Toshiba and NEC plan to present new specifications to committees in the end of August.
