Pioneer Electronics: single-component "sound processor" to replace multichannel acoustics?
Is it possible? Pioneer Electronics, having announced its "digital sound processor" PDSP-1, believes that single-component single-source systems can replace current discrete 5.1-channel audio.

PDSP-1 features 254 miniature speakers, creating the surround sound of precisely fucused "sound rays" from each speaker. Room wall reflection create a kind of virtually multichannel sound. At that the system can be set for any room geometry with a remote control. It´s interesting that the new technology is not based on the so-called psycho-acoustic model, used in many current surround systems.
PDSP-1 features 500 W total power and can be directly connected to DVD or CD player multichannel audio out. Multichannel sound is processed by an independent AV receiver inside the system.

PDSP-1 systems are expected for sale early in 2003. Pricing is unknown yet.
