Sun Fire 280R: new servers on 1.015 GHz UltraSPARC III Cu
Japanese Sun announced Sun Fire 280R 4U rackmount servers, based on new 1.015 GHz UltraSPARC III Cu processors. Samples will be shipped late in November, volume shipments will start in March 2003.
According to the company, Sun Fire 280R on new 1.015 GHz UltraSPARC III Cu will provide 17% higher performance than today´s 900 MHz systems. The model with two 1.015 GHz UltraSPARC III Cu (8MB cache), 2GB RAM, two 36Gb hard disks, DVD-ROM, and OS Solaris 8 will cost 3,050 thousand yens (about $25.400). The system will weigh 34 kg and feature 438x692x176 mm.
Another model Sun Fire 280R SSL with two 900 MHz UltraSPARC III Cu (8MB cache), SSL Sun Crypto Accelerator 1000, 2GB RAM, two 36GB HDD, DVD-ROM, OS Solaris 8 will cost 3,167 thousand yens ($26.400).
