NEC ValueStar FS: a concept brought to life
Not only Apple’s Steve Jobs can surprise with unusual Mac design. Futuristic PC concepts, designed by NEC, are to appear in Japanese retail in mid-December, as the ValueStar series. It’s interesting that the company believes these PCs will mainly attract housewives and young couples.

ValueStar FS solutions feature wide-format 17" LCD supporting 1280x768, the acryl-coated monitor panel is also the sound emitter, made using NEC´s SoundView technology. The 6W subwoofer is optional. Furthermore, the PC features wireless keyboard with trackball and remote control. To make any other consumer electronics obsolete, the concept has TV tuner with hardware MPEG-2 encoder and TV capture to HDD capability, and also CD-RW/DVD combo. For more quiet environment, the PC provides the NIGHT MODE button.

The serie will include two models, differing by white (ValueStar FS VS700/4DA) and starnight (VS700/4DB) bodies. Both models feature 1.7GHz Celerons and SiS651 chipsets with integrated graphics (up to 32Mb memory from the system), 256Mb DDR SDRAM PC2100 (up to 1Gb), 80Gb HDD, SD and PC Ñard Type II slots, Ethernet 10/100BASE-TX, S-VIDEO, modem, USB 2.0 and IEEE1394 interfaces. The dimensions are 516x193x382 mm, weight – 12 kg, expected price – about $1900.
