ATI RS300, Intel i865PL: new mainstream chipsets for Pentium 4
According to Taiwanese mass media, in the nearest future ATI Technologies and Intel are going to produce desktop Pentium 4 chipsets for the low-end segment. Naturally, VIA Technologies and SiS can’t leave this alone, being the main players there. So, it seems a new price struggle will begin in the low-end P4 chipset segment closer to the Fall.
According to provisional data, late in June ATI should present its RS300, a mainstream Pentium 4 chipset supporting dual-channel DDR400 and 800MHz FSB and featuring integrated Radeon 9000 graphics. Volume shipments are scheduled to July-August, with such brands, as Asustek and Gigabyte already interested.
Intel, in its turn, initially positioned the i865P for this segment, however with it supporting only 533MHz FSB and dual-channel DDR333, makers or buyers wouldn’t be that satisfied. So, in August the company plans extend the Springdale family with the mainstream i865PL supporting 800MHz FSB and single-channel DDR400. Mobo makers believe that i865PL will be in higher demand then i865P.
I guess the release of VIA PT800 and SiS655FX/SiS661FX darkened by inexpensive products from Intel and ATI. Still, Taiwanese companies can always use their usual weapon, i.e. prices.
