Asustek showcases DRW-0402P/D and aggressively explores the optical storage market
Taiwan-based Asustek Computer presented
its own-brand 4x half-height DVD-Dual drive DRW-0402P/D with Enhanced-IDE (ATAPI)
interface. The drive comes with a suggested retail price of about US$257 and
uses Pioneer’s pick-up heads (PUHs) and NEC’s chipsets.
As for writing speed, it is as follows:
- DVD+R: 4X, 2.4X (CLV)
- DVD+RW: 2.4X (CLV)
- DVD-R: 4X, 2X, 1X (CLV)
- DVD-RW: 2X, 1X (CLV)
- CD-R: 16X, 12X, 8X, 4X (CLV)
- CD-RW: 10X, 4X (CLV)
Reading speed is 12X max. (CAV) for DVD-ROM, 32X max. (CAV) for CD-ROM media.

Initial monthly shipments of the DRW-0402P/D will be about 50,000 units, while
the company targets shipping 300,000 units for the full year, the company said.
Acording to the sources Asustek expects to ship 10-12 million optical storage
drives in 2003, compared to six million units sold last year.
