Infineon samples 1Gbit DDR SDRAM
German Infineon Technologies started sampling its 1Gbit DDR SDRAM chips to a number of primary customers. According to the press release, these 160mm² chips are made using 0.11µm. This makes them the smallest 1Gbit DDR SDRAM available today.
Encased into 66-pin TSOP or 68-pin FBGA, new chips have x4, x8 and x16 architecture and work at 133 to 200 MHz clock speeds (DDR266-DDR400). To achieve the maximum density per module Infineon plans to use the Dual Die Stack technology in making 4Gb registered FBGA chips.
1Gbit DDR SDRAM will be initially used in registered and unbuffered memory for high-end servers and workstations. The primary task is the production of 2 and 4Gb registered DIMM along with unbuffered 2Gb DIMM. Notebook SO-DIMMs will be offered as 1 and 2Gb modules, with samples arriving in Q4 this year and volume production starting early 2004.
